How it's calculated
Mosteller (1987): BSA = √(height cm × weight kg ÷ 3600) Du Bois (1916): BSA = 0.007184 × kg^0.425 × cm^0.725 Haycock (1978): BSA = 0.024265 × kg^0.5378 × cm^0.3964
Body surface area is used to dose chemotherapy and some other drugs, and to index heart output to body size. An average adult is about 1.7–1.9 m². The formulas agree closely for typical adults and drift apart at the extremes of size; Haycock was made with children in mind.
