How it's calculated
km/L = mpg (US) × 1.609344 ÷ 3.785411784 L/100 km = 100 ÷ km/L ≈ 235.215 ÷ mpg (US)
Distance-per-fuel (mpg, km/L) and fuel-per-distance (L/100 km) are inverses, so a conversion is not a simple multiplication. US and UK mpg differ because their gallons differ: 30 US mpg is about 36 UK mpg. Saving fuel is easier to see in L/100 km, where the numbers fall in a straight line with fuel used.
