How it's calculated
mpg = miles ÷ gallons · L/100 km = litres ÷ km × 100 Cost per distance = fuel × price ÷ distance
Fill up, note the odometer, drive, then fill up again: the fuel it takes is what you used for that distance. Averaging over a few tanks smooths out pumps that click off at different points. Price is per US or UK gallon for miles, and per litre for kilometres.
