How it's calculated

CPM = cost ÷ impressions × 1,000
Cost = impressions ÷ 1,000 × CPM
Impressions = cost ÷ CPM × 1,000
CPC = cost ÷ clicks; CTR = clicks ÷ impressions × 100

CPM (cost per mille, from the Latin for thousand) is what 1,000 ad impressions cost. It is the standard way to price reach on display, video, social, podcast and newsletter ads, and it lets you compare campaigns of different sizes. Advertisers use it to budget; publishers and creators quote it as a rate card price. An impression is counted each time an ad is shown, so one person can make several. CPC and CTR show what happened after the impressions: clicks per 1 spent and the share of impressions that were clicked.

    About the CPM calculator

    This CPM calculator works with cost per mille, the price of 1,000 ad impressions. Give it any two of campaign cost, impressions and CPM and it finds the third: the CPM a campaign paid, what a given number of impressions will cost at a quoted rate, or how many impressions a budget buys. Add the number of clicks and it also works out the cost per click (CPC) and the click-through rate (CTR). Advertisers use it to plan budgets and compare campaigns of different sizes; publishers, creators and podcasters use it to price a rate card or check an offer. CPM prices vary by platform, audience, placement and season, so you enter your own figures, and each answer shows the division it came from.

    How to use it

    1. Choose what to “Find”: CPM, cost or impressions.
    2. Enter the two numbers you know: “Campaign cost”, “Impressions” or the CPM.
    3. Enter “Clicks (optional)” to see the cost per click and click-through rate, or 0 to skip them.
    4. Read the result and compare CPMs between campaigns, placements or quotes.

    Worked example

    A campaign costs 2,400 and delivers 320,000 impressions: CPM = 2,400 ÷ 320,000 × 1,000 = 7.50. It drew 1,600 clicks, so the cost per click is 2,400 ÷ 1,600 = 1.50 and the click-through rate is 1,600 ÷ 320,000 × 100 = 0.5%. At the same 7.50 CPM, a budget of 900 would buy 900 ÷ 7.5 × 1,000 = 120,000 impressions.

    Questions people ask

    How do I calculate CPM?

    Divide the campaign cost by the number of impressions and multiply by 1,000. Spending 500 on 100,000 impressions is a CPM of 5.

    How many impressions does my budget buy?

    Divide the budget by the CPM and multiply by 1,000. A budget of 300 at a CPM of 6 buys 50,000 impressions.

    What does CPM stand for?

    Cost per mille, from the Latin mille for thousand. It is the price of 1,000 ad impressions, where one impression is one showing of the ad.

    Is a lower CPM always better?

    Not on its own. Cheap impressions that nobody clicks or buys from can cost more per result than dearer ones, so compare CPM with CPC, conversions and the ROAS calculator result.

    How is CPM related to what creators earn?

    CPM is what advertisers pay. What a publisher or creator keeps is usually lower after platform or network shares; the ad revenue calculator turns a CPM into income.
