How it's calculated
1 marla = 225 sq ft (25 sq yd) or 272.25 sq ft (30.25 sq yd) 1 kanal = 20 marla 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft; 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m²; 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft On the 272.25 standard, 1 acre = 160 marla = 8 kanal
The marla and the kanal are the land units of Pakistan and northern India, and the marla has two common sizes. The traditional one, standardised under British rule as a square rod (16.5 ft × 16.5 ft), is 272.25 sq ft or 30.25 sq yd, so 160 marla make an acre; it is the size used in revenue (land) records and for agricultural land. Many planned housing schemes and authorities use a rounder 225 sq ft or 25 sq yd marla instead: DHA Lahore's construction regulations define a marla as 25 sq yd or 225 sq ft and a kanal as 4,500 sq ft. On both, a kanal is 20 marla. Pick the standard your plot uses and convert to the units you need. Square metres use the exact international foot (1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m²).

About the Marla calculator
This marla calculator converts plot sizes between marla, kanal, square feet, square yards (gaz), square metres and acres. The catch with the marla is that it has two common sizes. The traditional marla, a square rod of 16.5 × 16.5 ft, is 272.25 sq ft or 30.25 sq yd, so 160 marla make an acre (Wikipedia: Marla); it is the measure behind revenue (land) records and agricultural land. Many planned housing schemes use a rounder 225 sq ft marla: DHA Lahore's construction regulations define a marla as 25 sq yd or 225 sq ft and a kanal as 20 marla or 4,500 sq ft. Pick the standard your plot uses, enter the area and the units, and the calculator gives every other unit plus the same area on the other standard, with the working shown. To measure a plot from its sides first, use the square footage calculator; for other area units, the area converter.
How to use it
- Choose the “Marla standard”: 225 sq ft or 272.25 sq ft, as your plot's papers or housing society use.
- Enter the “Area” and choose the unit it is in under “From”.
- Choose the unit you want under “To”.
- Read the answer, the area in every other unit, and how many marla it is on the other standard.
Worked example
A 5 marla plot on the 225 sq ft standard is 5 × 225 = 1,125 sq ft, which is 125 sq yd, 104.52 m² and 0.25 kanal. The same 1,125 sq ft is only 4.13 marla on the 272.25 sq ft standard. On that traditional standard one kanal is 20 × 272.25 = 5,445 sq ft, or 605 sq yd, and 10 marla is 2,722.5 sq ft.

Questions people ask
How many square feet are in a marla?
Either 225 sq ft or 272.25 sq ft, depending on the standard. Planned housing schemes such as DHA Lahore use 225 sq ft; revenue records and the traditional measure use 272.25 sq ft.
How many marla are in a kanal?
20 marla on both standards. That makes a kanal 4,500 sq ft (500 sq yd) on the 225 sq ft marla and 5,445 sq ft (605 sq yd) on the 272.25 sq ft marla.
How do I convert square feet to marla?
Divide the square feet by the size of one marla on your standard: 2,250 sq ft is 10 marla at 225 sq ft each, but 8.26 marla at 272.25 sq ft each.
Why do some papers say a marla is 272 sq ft and a kanal 5,440 sq ft?
Those are rounded figures for the traditional 272.25 sq ft marla, which Zameen notes is the marla of agricultural land in the revenue record. Some localities also use other sizes, such as 250 sq ft, so check which one a sale is priced on.
Which marla standard should I use for my plot?
The one in the plot's documents or the housing society's rules. If you are buying or selling, confirm the size with the society, the land records office or a property lawyer before you agree a price per marla.
