How it's calculated
Total = Σ (Tariff points for each qualification and grade) A level: A* 56, A 48, B 40, C 32, D 24, E 16 AS: A 20, B 16, C 12, D 10, E 6 Scottish Higher: A 33, B 27, C 21, D 15; Advanced Higher: A 56, B 48, C 40, D 32 Extended Project: A* 28, A 24, B 20, C 16, D 12, E 8 BTEC Extended Diploma: D*D*D* 168 … PPP 48
Adds up UCAS Tariff points, the numbers UK universities use to compare post-16 qualifications, from a list of your qualifications and grades. The points come from UCAS's Tariff tables: an A level is worth 16 (grade E) to 56 (A), an AS level 6 to 20, a Scottish Higher 15 to 33, an Advanced Higher 32 to 56 and the Extended Project 8 to 28. Pearson BTEC Nationals (QCF) are included in all five sizes, from the Certificate (8 to 28) to the Extended Diploma (48 for PPP to 168 for DDD). Each line shows its points, so you can check them against the table.

About the UCAS Points calculator
This UCAS points calculator adds up the UCAS Tariff points for your post-16 qualifications, the scale many UK universities and colleges use to compare different qualifications when they set entry requirements. List each qualification and grade on its own line, such as A level A∗, AS level B, Higher A, Advanced Higher B, EPQ A or BTEC Extended Diploma DDM, and it gives the total with the points for each line. The values come from UCAS's own Tariff tables, the Tariff used since the 2017 admissions cycle, so you can check every line against the source. Students use it to see whether predicted grades meet a points offer, and parents and teachers use it to compare routes. Remember that many courses ask for grades rather than points. The Tariff is a UK system; to work out grade averages elsewhere, try the GPA calculator.
How to use it
- In “Qualifications and grades, one per line”, type each qualification then its grade, for example A level B.
- Put a number in front for several at the same grade: 3 x Higher A.
- For BTECs, name the size: BTEC Extended Diploma, BTEC Diploma, BTEC 90-Credit Diploma, BTEC Subsidiary Diploma or BTEC Certificate, then the grade such as D∗D.
- Read the total and the points from each kind of qualification.
Worked example
A levels at A∗, B and C are worth 56 + 40 + 32 = 128 points. Add an AS level at grade B (16) and an Extended Project at grade A (24) and the total is 168 UCAS Tariff points.

Questions people ask
How many UCAS points is an A level worth?
From 16 for grade E to 56 for A∗: A∗ 56, A 48, B 40, C 32, D 24, E 16. An AS level is worth 20 for an A down to 6 for an E.
How many UCAS points are Scottish Highers worth?
A Higher is worth 33 (A), 27 (B), 21 (C) or 15 (D), and an Advanced Higher 56, 48, 40 or 32. Universities usually don't count a Higher in a subject you also took at Advanced Higher.
What is the Extended Project worth?
Between 8 (grade E) and 28 (A∗), half an A level at each grade, in UCAS's Tariff tables.
Do universities count every qualification I have?
Not always. UCAS notes that universities set their own entry requirements, may count only certain qualifications or your best three, and usually count only the higher level in one subject, such as the A level and not the AS.
Which BTECs does this include?
The five sizes of Pearson BTEC National (QCF) in UCAS's Tariff tables, from the Certificate (8 to 28 points) to the Extended Diploma (48 to 168). Newer BTEC Nationals and other qualifications are in UCAS's own Tariff calculator.
Is my points total enough for a course?
Only the university can say. Check the course's entry requirements on UCAS or ask the admissions team or your school adviser.
