How it's calculated
Cooper (1968): VO2 max = (metres in 12 min − 504.9) ÷ 44.73 Uth et al. (2004): VO2 max = 15.3 × max HR ÷ resting HR Units: ml of oxygen per kg per minute; 1 MET = 3.5 ml/kg/min
VO2 max is the most oxygen your body can use in hard exercise, the standard measure of aerobic fitness. The Cooper test asks you to cover as much ground as you can in 12 minutes on a flat track; the heart-rate method needs no running at all but is rougher. Norms vary a lot with age and sex; the bands shown are a broad guide for adults. A lab treadmill test measures it directly.
