How it's calculated

CBSE: percentage = CGPA × 9.5
Custom: percentage = (CGPA − subtract) × multiplier

CBSE (India) gives the × 9.5 factor as an indicative way to turn its CGPA into a percentage. It is not a universal rule: universities and other boards publish their own conversions, some multiply by 10, some subtract a number first, and some give a table. Choose "My institution's formula" and enter the numbers from your own institution's rule. The share of the scale is shown only for comparison.

About the CGPA to Percentage calculator

This CGPA to percentage calculator converts a cumulative grade point average into a percentage. By default it uses the rule from India's Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which gives an indicative percentage of marks as 9.5 × CGPA on its 10-point scale. That rule belongs to CBSE: universities, other school boards and employers in India and elsewhere publish their own conversions, and some multiply by a different number, subtract a value first, or use a table. If your institution has its own formula, choose “My institution's formula” and enter its multiplier, the number it subtracts and the top of its scale. The working is shown, along with a plain share of the scale for comparison, which is not an official conversion. Use the formula on your transcript when an application asks for a percentage. On a US-style 4.0 scale, the GPA calculator works out the GPA itself.

    How to use it

    1. Enter your “CGPA”.
    2. Under “Conversion”, keep “CBSE (× 9.5)” or choose “My institution's formula”.
    3. For your own formula, fill in “Multiply by”, “Subtract from the CGPA first” and “CGPA scale out of”.
    4. Read the percentage and the highest percentage that formula can give.

    Worked example

    A CBSE CGPA of 8.6 gives 8.6 × 9.5 = 81.7% as the indicative percentage. The highest possible on this rule is 10 × 9.5 = 95%. With a formula that subtracts 0.75 and multiplies by 10, a CGPA of 8 becomes (8 − 0.75) × 10 = 72.5%.

    Questions people ask

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

For CBSE, multiply the CGPA by 9.5: 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8%. For any other institution, use the formula it publishes, usually on the back of the transcript or on its website.

Where does the 9.5 multiplier come from?

CBSE gave it in Circular No. 24 of 28 May 2010: overall indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 × CGPA, and subject-wise percentage = 9.5 × the subject's grade point.

Is CGPA × 9.5 used by every university?

No. It is CBSE's indicative rule. Universities set their own conversions, so a 9.5 result may not match what your university prints.

Why is 10 CGPA only 95% with the CBSE rule?

Because 10 × 9.5 = 95. The rule gives an indicative figure, not your exact marks, and that is how the formula works at the top of the scale.

Can I just divide my CGPA by 10 and multiply by 100?

That gives the share of the scale, which the calculator shows for comparison, but it is not an official conversion. Applications that ask for a percentage usually expect your institution's own formula.
