Test Grade Calculator
Your score on a test as a percentage from the number of questions or points and how many you got wrong or right.
Result…
How it's calculated
Score % = (total − wrong) ÷ total × 100 Letter (one common scale): A ≥ 90 · B ≥ 80 · C ≥ 70 · D ≥ 60 · F < 60
Every question counts the same here, so points per question changes the points but not the percentage. If questions carry different points, enter the test in points: the total points and the points you lost. Tests with negative marking for wrong answers need that penalty taken off first. For a course grade made of several parts, use the weighted grade calculator; for the score you need on a final, the grade calculator.

About the Test Grade calculator
This test grade calculator gives the score on a test or quiz as a percentage. Enter the total number of questions (or the total points) and either how many you got wrong or how many you got right; half marks such as 2.5 are fine. It also shows the points scored when each question is worth more than one point, and a letter grade on one common scale: A for 90% and above, B for 80%, C for 70%, D for 60% and F below that. That scale is only one of many. Schools and countries use other cut-offs, plus and minus grades, or numbers instead of letters, so check how your own teacher or school grades. Teachers can use it to mark a stack of papers quickly, and students to check a result. For a course grade built from several tests, use the grade calculator to see what you need on a final exam.
How to use it
- Under “I know the number”, choose “Wrong” or “Correct”.
- Enter the “Total questions (or points)”.
- Enter the “Number wrong” or the “Number correct”.
- If each question is worth more than one point, set “Points per question”.
- Read the score, the letter grade and the points.
Worked example
A 40-question test with 6 wrong has 40 − 6 = 34 correct, so the score is 34 ÷ 40 × 100 = 85%, a B on the 90/80/70/60 scale. At 2.5 points per question that is 85 points out of 100.

Questions people ask
How do I calculate a test score percentage?
Divide the number correct by the total and multiply by 100. 22 right out of 25 is 88%.
What grade is 85% on a test?
On the common 90/80/70/60 scale it is a B. Other schools may call it something else, so check your own grading scale.
What if questions are worth different points?
Enter the test in points instead: the total points as the total and the points you lost as the number wrong. The percentage comes out the same as working it by hand.
How do I work out the score with negative marking?
Take the penalty off first. Add up the points you earned minus the points deducted, then enter that as correct out of the total points.
Does points per question change my percentage?
No. When every question has the same value, the points scale up but the percentage stays the same. To find a percentage of any number, use the percentage calculator.
How do I calculate the percentage of marks I got?
Divide the marks you scored by the total marks and multiply by 100: 68 out of 80 is 68 ÷ 80 × 100 = 85%. Enter the total marks and the marks you lost (or scored), and the calculator does the same sum.
