μ

Friction Calculator

Friction force from the coefficient and the normal force, with the normal force worked out from a mass on a flat or sloped surface if you like.

How it's calculated

F = μ × N
N = m × g × cos θ (on a slope)

Friction resists sliding and is roughly proportional to how hard the surfaces are pressed together (the normal force), not to the contact area. The coefficient μ depends on both materials and is found by experiment, so published values are approximate. On a slope the normal force falls with cos θ.
