Hours to Decimal Calculator
Hours, minutes and seconds to decimal hours and back, minutes to hours, and milliseconds to hours, minutes and seconds.

How it's calculated
Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3600 Minutes = decimal part × 60 · Seconds = what is left × 60 Hours = minutes ÷ 60 · h:m:s = milliseconds ÷ 3,600,000, ÷ 60,000, ÷ 1000
Decimal hours write a length of time as one number, which is what timesheets, payroll and invoices multiply by an hourly rate. Divide the minutes by 60 (and the seconds by 3600) and add them to the hours: 7 h 45 min is 7.75 hours. Going back, multiply the decimal part by 60 for the minutes. A common mistake is to read 7.45 hours as 7 h 45 min; it is really 7 h 27 min. The other modes turn a number of minutes into hours and a count of milliseconds, as stopwatches and software log them, into hours, minutes and seconds. To add up or subtract lengths of time use the time calculator, and for the time between two clock times the hours calculator.

About the Hours to Decimal calculator
This hours to decimal calculator converts a length of time between hours, minutes and seconds and decimal hours, the single number that timesheets, payroll and invoices multiply by an hourly rate. Type 6 hours 50 minutes and it gives 6.8333 hours, with the figure rounded to 2 decimals as many payroll systems record it. It also works backwards, turning 7.45 hours into 7 h 27 min, which catches the common mix-up between decimal hours and clock notation. Two more modes turn a number of minutes into hours and a count of milliseconds, as stopwatches, apps and software logs record time, into hours, minutes and seconds. Each answer shows the division step by step. It converts lengths of time only; for the time between two clock times use the hours calculator, and to add or subtract durations use the time calculator. The method is explained in how to convert hours and minutes to decimal hours.
How to use it
- Pick a mode under “Convert”: “h:m:s → decimal”, “Decimal → h:m:s”, “Minutes → hours” or “Milliseconds → h:m:s”.
- For decimal hours, enter the “Hours”, “Minutes” and, if you track them, “Seconds”.
- To go back, type the number into “Decimal hours”, “Minutes” or “Milliseconds”.
- Read the main result, then the rounded figure, total minutes and seconds and the clock format below it.
Worked example
A shift of 6 h 50 min is 6 + 50 ÷ 60 = 6.8333 decimal hours, which rounds to 6.83, or 410 minutes in all. Going the other way, a weekly total of 38.6 hours is 38 whole hours plus 0.6 × 60 = 36 minutes, so 38 h 36 min, or 2316 minutes.
